Are Yo A 5% Solution or a 20% Solution?

Almost everyone I talk with has an energy problem. Either they have too much of the wrong kind or not enough of the right kind. There is no doubt that we live in a fast paced society with many potential stresses.  Maintaining a steady level of useful energy is possible with the right type of diet and exercise.  For those of you who insist on a “standard American diet” or SAD as I like to call it, I’m afraid there isn’t much hope. People on SAD diets eventually succumb to stroke, heart disease, kidney failure and diabetes. They die a premature, painful death. Much of their lives are spent semi-disabled. Disabled enough to not be able to comfortably walk around the block without getting winded, never being able to use their body as they will, and in general unable to feel comfortable in their everyday lives. Worse  still they are depleted of the natural vitality which makes being alive a pleasurable and an enjoyable experience.

We have in the past talked about “prana” and most of you are aware of its importance in our everyday lives and the amount of vitality we feel. The more prana we expose our bodies to the better we feel and the more vitality we possess. This is how we maintain our passion in life, our thirst for growth and learning, and the energy to fulfill our desires. Without proper amounts of prana we stagnate, gain weight, lose interest and eventually get ill. How do we go about assuring that we get the needed prana? A plant-based diet is a large part of the answer.

Recently, my friend and fellow vegan, Mary Ann suggested I read the book, “The China Study”.  I had heard of the book and had read quotes from it in Dr. Furhmans’ book, “Eat to Live”.  I was sold within the first few pages. Then I came across some information on rat studies they had done. (he does apologize for the use of animals in the studies……and no longer does such experiments.) The researchers noticed that the rats they were feeding 5% animal protein (Casein) were far more active than the rats they fed 20% animal protein. So, they separated the rats up into these two groups. In the cages they put an exercise wheel with a counter on it. You know what I’m going to say next, right? The rats that ate a diet of only 5% animal protein voluntarily exercised twice as much as the rats on the diet of 20% animal protein.  This fact absolutely blew my mind. The difference of 15% fat in the diet increased the energy levels doubled that of the other rats. In other words they felt twice as good. And I can tell you, so do I! In fact, I cannot imagine what life would be like if I had continued to eat meat and worse, meat by-products.

So, ask yourself this question if you are still eating meat, “would I like to feel twice as good as I do now?”  It only takes two weeks for the meat in your system to work its way out of your intestines. And with the by-products it will take a bit longer of course. Just think of it this way, in two weeks you could lose 5-7 pounds in the healthiest way possible and increase your energy levels two-fold. So, listen up Mommys and Daddys, executives and construction workers, nurses and doctors, quit eating meat. It is really bad for you, worse for the animal, and would solve a large part of the pollution problems in our county and in our water supplies! Take control of your diet and demand the best for yourself and your families. Take your hard earned money to the grocery store and start voting meat off the self and out of the coolers. We can turn our health care crisis around and create a healthier tomorrow one family at a time by implementing the 5% solution or just quit eating meat entirely.

I highly recommend you read, “The China Study” for yourself. Dr. Campbell is not only knowledgeable but a true kindred soul. The information in the book is presented in an easy to understand way, not overly technical and sincere. And it always gives me pleasure and comfort to hear that the choices I am making are grounded in science and not in emotion. I eat for nutrition and pleasure and get both from my vegan diet!
