Let your loneliness spur journey to self-knowledge

Q. How can I live alone and not be lonely? -- B. M., Boca Raton

A. I live with my husband, two teenagers, two dogs and three cats, and sometimes I feel lonely. I don't believe your feelings are related solely to living alone. When we let the business of the world fall away, we all meet that deeper place inside that tends to feel alone.

As you reflect on the choices you have made and the roles you have played, you may find this is a turning point for your authentic self to emerge. Living authentically requires an excavation of your beliefs, values and your passions. It becomes an opportunity to ask for what you want and need from others and to create healthy relationships with family and friends.

Are you willing to journey into the realm of self-knowledge? Explore classes on personal growth, spirituality and wellness. Seek out a group of people who will stimulate you and open new doors of perception. Venture into the unknown with God as your partner.

Many have gone before us, paving the way to find purpose and meaning in our lives. "This is what you shall do," Walt Whitman said: ""Re-examine all you have been told at school, church or in any book, dismiss what insults your very soul, and your flesh shall become a great poem."
