Psychic Sensitivity and Spiritual Development
Because of the work I do teaching metaphysics, I come across people at times who have a very sensitive nature. Psychic ability is something that all human beings possess to some degree, although many of us ignore the signals we receive because we can't ascertain their origin. I believe tuning out these messages is a mistake which can be just as bad as thinking every communication we receive is coming from God. St Paul tells us that God is both "in all through all and in you all" and, "he in whom we live and move and have our being". In this context the messages are coming from some aspect of God, so they are right to some degree, but at the same time that doesn't even narrow the field (so to speak) about where it is coming from. The word Psyche literally means "soul" so psychic power is soul power. The thing that most people don’t realize is that soul also means consciousness and there are different levels of consciousness operating simultaneously in the human constitution.
There is a lower psychic nature that we share with the animal kingdom. This is a manifestation of the sensitivities of the soul or consciousness inherent in the body itself, sometimes referred to as the anima mundi. It is instinctive and is sometimes called woman's intuition. That is largely because women respond to these feelings more than men do. It is not that men don't have the sensitivity, they just don't respond as readily to things like feelings. I believe this is also amplified in women once they have had a child. The connection is so deep and it brings to the forefront the need to respond because of the vulnerability of a child in their care. Once reinforced by the experience of sensing something like a child in trouble, and averting catastrophe because they did, they are more and more likely to believe these feelings when they occur. Again, it is not necessarily the increasing of the sensitivities, but an increased willingness to recognize and respond to them.
The mistake is in taking these lower forms of intuition as a sign of high spiritual development. Animals are psychic and we know this intuitively. Have you ever had someone come over to your house that your normally happy-go-lucky dog didn’t like, only to find out later he was not the nicest person in the world? I have seen this happen and really started watching. If my dog didn’t like you I got pretty attentive and careful.
Sometimes people go through a period in childhood where they are very sensitive and then they “lose” this sensitivity because it is suppressed by the culture or the family unit. I’m sure that this occurs, but I don’t necessarily agree in whole with the cause ascribed. We relive and experience our spiritual growth throughout our childhood and on into our adult lives in the same way that we relearn the lessons of the race, like walking and talking. In some cases what is seen as a loss is simply the passing of a stage on the continuing journey toward the opportunity for new growth in spiritual development.
The higher intuitional sensitivities exist in all of us as well, but they are brought to the forefront of consciousness in a different way. Rather than the animal sensitivities that can be brought forward in a mother or even in a soldier, these are developed through mental emotional, mental, and physical purification and through disciplines like meditation. These are the sensitivities of the inner thinker or observer. This is what most people refer to when they say the word Soul.
The key is to open the mind and heart to the finer vibrations in the universe, and yet take care in trying to assess the source of the messages or signals we receive. Failing that, we can at least make sure we are consciously observing what is going on and following our intuition. You are undoubtedly sensing something, and you may be getting good and useful information but that does not mean that the creator of the heavens and the earth or the archangel Gabrielle is its source. In many cases you may be accessing a higher aspect of your own consciousness.
Man is a complex organism with a physical body. He is not the physical body itself. Most of us believe we have a soul that vitalizes the body, a body which actually is much more complex than the dense physical part that we see. There is a vital or etheric body, and emotional or Astral body, and a mental or Manasic body as well. All of these, when developed and purified will become more useful and responsive to the overshadowing Soul which is the first point of contact with the universal mind.
Through Soul awareness we can gain, with proper training, access to what are called the Akashic Records. This is the spiritual and some would say astral history of all that has been, will be, or was ardently wished for even if it never occurred. So even at this stage we must interpret the information and assess it intuitively.
We can also become an interested observer in our own lives. The mind of the human being is dual in its nature. There is the lower or concrete mind, and the higher or abstract mind. Theosophy and the Ageless Wisdom tell us that the Soul resides in what is called the causal body on the upper levels of the mental plane. Accessing the creative or abstract mind opens up the avenue to the Soul. Meditation is the key to this type of development. Once Soul contact is established, we become aware of the telepathic interplay that is constantly going on from soul to soul. The Soul resides in a state where there is no time and space so access to all that is and ever was is available to the consciousness that is opened up and self actualized at this level.
For most of us, this kind of development lies far in the future. We have a long way to go, but we can take our lives in our hands and begin the development of the mind and intuition and if you set yourself to these disciplines you will open up to a world that you never knew existed beyond the veil you don’t know exists.
